What will make you an Exceptional CSM?

What if AI doesn't push CSMs toward specialization, but finally develops and masters what makes them truly exceptional?

Many assume that the answer to AI augmentation in CS is division of labor.  This translates to Onboarding specialists. Renewal managers. Outcome architects.  Many CS thought leaders assume that humans will deep dive into one lane while automation handles the rest.

But is this where we want CS to go?

I want to challenge that assumption.

For years, the 'jack of all trades' criticism of CSMs was valid because manual work meant spreading efforts thin across many tasks, limiting depth. Now, AI transforms this landscape, enabling CSMs to focus on what truly matters.

Preparing for QBRs, building knowledge bases, guiding customers through adoption, and delivering training. The workload was real. The bandwidth wasn't.

But this argument can now be challenged as AI changes our landscape. AI is now penetrating not just CS tools, but every B2B application your customers use.

  • It will handle the repetitive.

  • It will prepare the analysis.

  • It will surface the insights.

  • It will reduce the time CSMs spend on tasks that never required human judgment in the first place.

It’s time for a new formula.

The time and effort saved by Technology will be balanced by Human-first capabilities.

So the question isn't: should CSMs specialize because they're stretched too thin?

The question is: now that AI removes the stretch, what do exceptional CSMs do with that capacity?

My answer: They develop the human muscles that no AI will ever replicate, empowering CSMs to feel valued and motivated in their evolving roles.

-> The ability to read a room.

-> To navigate a difficult conversation.

-> To build trust with a busy and doubtful executive.

-> To know when to follow the process, and equally important, when to abandon it.

The future of CS isn't specialization.

It's a new phase where AI handles the predictable, and exceptional CSMs own everything that remains unpredictable, human, and complex.

That's not a jack of all trades. That's a strategic power.
